Custis M. Byars Managing Partner

A founding partner of Buist Byars & Taylor LLC, Custis now also serves as the managing partner for the firm.  As such, he oversees all of the firm’s practice areas, as well as the management team.  He offers insight and support to the other attorneys, interacts with many clients, and is now primarily based in the Mt. Pleasant office.

Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Custis grew up in the upstate of South Carolina and attended boarding school in Massachusetts.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Charleston.  After ten years working in the contracting business, he attended the University of South Carolina School of Law. Upon obtaining his Juris Doctor, he began practicing law with his father-in-law, respected real estate attorney, Thomas G. Buist.

From years overseeing the firm’s Johns Island office, handling countless matters and closings on Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island, he gleaned a true understanding of the unique issues in that particular market. He has earned the respect of many real estate agents, lenders and clients and developed many long-standing relationships.

Custis enjoys golfing regularly and is a travel buff.  Some of his most recent destinations include Italy, Singapore, Vietnam, Chile, and Argentina. He and his wife, Frances, reside in Yeamans Hall, and their two daughters, Eleanor and Lou Lou, live and work in NYC.
